"The Willard, a very limited edition gicleé print of the famed Willard Hotel in Washington, D.C., painted by Pawinee McEntire at the specific request of the Willard Hotel management. An original creation, it blends an image of the current hotel into a surrounding setting from the mid 1800's.
The Willard has a rich history. Located at 14th Street and Pennsylvania
Avenue, it was originally the City Hotel, built in 1816.
In 1850, Henry Willard acquired the property and renamed it the
Willard Hotel. Because of its close
proximity to the White House, it enjoyed renown as a social and political center
for several decades. The original hotel was replaced with a more modern
structure on the same site in 1901, and operated until 1968.
It remained closed until 1986, when it underwent a very extensive
renovation and opened its doors to guests once again.
In its early days, the Willard hosted a number of
notables, including author Charles Dickens and Presidents Taylor, Fillmore,
Buchanan, and Lincoln. According to
some, President Grant coined the term “lobbyists” in the Willard, referring
to the many people who met him in the lobby to deal for political and financial
gain. Many royalty slept there in
comfort, as did Martin Luther King, who wrote his “I have a dream” speech
while staying there in August, 1963.
Today, the Willard Hotel, now known as the Willard
Intercontinental Washington, is an active part of Washington society and remains
a favorite of leaders and world figures.
